The Oseti (O SETI ie Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) are one of the few times which have an overt mission based impetus for first contact and assistance.

Only recently freed from the shackles of foreign rule, the Osseti are still working on the consequences of their branding, a bone marrow-destroying bacterium that could only be "treated" by their former feudal lords. After the overthrow, the antigen reserves were used up very quickly and a cruel and slow infirmity began. Fortunately, children remain immune until the age of 12, but then their immune systems also let them down and the same agonizing course that begins with every Osseti begins. Basically, this bacterium is a well-known, but nevertheless very difficult to cure quickly in this epidemic spread. It will probably take decades until the plague is completely wiped out. We should start as soon as possible because they literally cry for help and pay for it too.

This exposes the flaw of the criticisms of ethnocentrism. Not all cultures are alike or equally valuable. They need your help building medical facilities and offer your people nothing. Only pure altruism would inspire first contact, and the pathetic aspect is they won't take it from the Omega even after a 3500 gift. They won't start trade with a 5000 credit in their behalf. (Shrugs). The Omega are entirely innocent, the Oseti are just biased against the Omega.

Xenocentrism is the idea of a people that some cultures are superior to one's own. That due to the crude state of one's industrial capacity, for example, that one's own nation might be terribly inferior in workmanship.

A friend of mine is from a tiny nation and there are a scant number of PhDs in his country. What few there are end up in government as administrators over say education. He fully agrees with a realistic look at his nation's capacity to produce even educated people given their limitations. Many of his people still live in primitive tribes where even adequate drinking water from wells is problematic.

It's highly likely that whatever we feel about the Earth, that if we met other species from the galaxy, that humans would be seen as extremely backward. We wouldn't have their technological ability. Our ideas would seem puerile and parochial.

If you look at where we are located in the Milky Way, it's not a significant locale in the galaxy,but is a backwater region.

A visiting extraterrestrial species may be shocked we still use antibiotics as we know they are failing to confer protection and though we can make cocktails of antibiotics to attempt to keep bacteria from antibiotic resistence, it will soon fail. Millions may die. We actually have scant ways to treat viruses as well.

Humans would likely be woefully uneducated compared to visitors from other star systems.

Extraterrestrials would likely be shocked we use chlorine, chloromines, or bromaines to purify water in city water utilities as well as fluoride which is a neurotoxin.

If we honestly explained modern banking to them using fractional reserve lending ie the banks loan currency that they don't physically possess, the extraterrestrials would say....

"But surely that is a criminal offense! How can one charge interest on a so-called loan when the issuer lacks the money to offer a loan???"

Extraterrestrials might conclude that we are not a sentient species at all.

There would be a terrible risk that many seeing human inadequacy that they would be convinced the extraterrestrials would be superior and so severe loyalty issues would happen and capitulation and collapse of most human paradigms leading to worldwide chaos.

No human concepts would be seen as valid and so one would expect severe nihilism one end of the continuum, and people engaging in suicidal ideation. Others would inadvertently become collaborators. Guerilla opposition groups would foster even worse partisan groups.

Realistically that is what you could mod in as at the very least you would have tremendous civil unrest based upon the frequency of first contact and the coping mechanisms of the people.

Which is why extraterrestrial disclosure may not go public.

Famous French alien researcher Dr. Jacques Vallee who studied astrophysics and was the assistant to Dr. Allen Hynek, discounts the extraterrestrial hypothesis as implausible given the infinite fuel required for warp speed in any practical sense.

He believes in an interdimensional hypothesis, that other life that is non-human coexists in this space time as they are dwelling at higher dimensions. Thus when their vessels pass through 4 dimensional space time, this temporal distortion reveals their presence.

This video esplains the highly plausible potentially practical Alcumbierre warp drive which would theoretically allow travel to nearby star systems and perhaps allow close scans of say Gliese 667 Cc which is a super-Earth class planet that may be one of the best candidates for colonization.

It's 23.62 light years away or a little over one sector away (20 light years) in BotE terms.

Just to have some sense of scale, based on the circumferance of the Earth, the farthest distance between two points is 12450.5 miles based upon traveling the surface of the Earth, not tunneling. So that is 20037.1 kilometers.

So an asteroid coming within 9,000 miles is CLOSE especially as once that close with so little warning, then no reasonable evacuation could occur based on its speed versus naturally eccentric tumbling (and that last part makes celestial mechanics a nightmare predicting the impact zone). That asteroid is not a perfect sphere and besides tumbling, it may be rotating.

Force equals mass times acceleration and you would have variations based on striking the Earth's atmosphere and gravitational effects from the Sun and the Earth altering the course of the asteroid.

You would have something like the skipping of a stone across a pond in some instances ie a glancing blow off the atmosphere. And in others... a deadly full on impact.

Those vessels in BotE don't move to a fixed place in the galaxy, but those planetary systems (truly multiple stacked solar systems in a sector) are all moving in helical patterns and the vessels would be sort of chasing different star systems to arrive there by accelerating faster than the star's acceleration.

As a frame of reference, we arbitrarily use a Cartesian coordinate system that seems fixed from our vantage point, but that is because we have the illusion of sitting still when actually the Earth is spinning, and rotating in an elipse and also being pulled by the sun traveling through space time within the galaxy.

The Earth's speed through the galaxy is 1.3 million miles per hour (2.1 million kilometers per hour) !

So a navigator in BotE who returned to the launching coordinates of their vessel would NOT return home whatsoever. Very few human beings could wrap their head around that kind of navigation and would just give up and rely upon navigational computers with serious redundancy as the slightest error...even 0.0000001 % would get you hopelessly lost.

Thus the irritation by T'Pol on Star Trek Enterprise when a course is set and has even the slightest error.

A navigator on a BotE vessel is trying to catch up to a star's acceleration, and this would be like two vehicles and one tries to match and then exceed in relation to the other, and then a passenger in the faster vehicle jumping into the other slower vehicle.

So now imagine when the captain says, "plot an intercept course". Good luck with that.

In the now venerable Elite computer game which came out in 1984, new players were stunned as you actually had to learn how to navigate to a star system, and using celestial mechanics, then match the speed and rotation, and dock. And it was difficult.

There are multiple themes and symbols from various myths like the ancient Greek and Roman "nymphs" who were the daughters of various gods like sacred groves or the personification of rivers in this poem by Yeats.

But for BotE purposes, the longing for an idealized partner is a frequent theme in science fiction literature.

Since extraterrestrials can literally do anything and are only limited by our imagination, then their appearance can beguile as well as repel.

From the study of aesthetics in Art, you would find long discussions on symmetry and variations of the Golden Mean influencing "beauty".

The mathematcal term for the Golden Men or the Fibbonaci Sequence is called phi which is 1.618034 and it's found everywhere.
