The Hanchec

The Hanchac are an ancient breed of cellulose-like earth beings, the exterior of which can take any plant-like shape including massive woody plants. They must be in direct contact with the earth at all times and cannot leave their planet. The origin of this strange species is unclear, but geologists suspect a direct connection with the broad deritium layer just below the planet's surface. The Hanchac confront foreign beings with complete ignorance and mostly also with derision and ridicule, by trying to recreate the counterpart from their body substance and performing wild, atypical, grimace-like movements. Movement is a means of contempt for the Hanchac, also mutually this is practiced against outcasts, who have to cover long distances under the silent laughter and rustling of leaves of the rest of the Hanchac and are only allowed to transplant themselves firmly into the ground again in a remote, lonely place. They are very reluctant to dismantle their life-giving deritium.

Home system: Hanchac

Technological progress: very backward

Special ability: pacifist

Bribery: very difficult to bribe

Spaceman nation: no

Special building: Deritium mining permit: +10 deritium, -3 morale in the system
They may be pacifists, but they are extreme isolationists and culturally use bigotry as a coping mechanism to perpetuate their isolationism and way of life. They also have a way to acquire a huge amount of deritium, but they would be fiercely against mining it as well.

So you could exploit them and eventually incorporate them into your empire. Should you do so?

Be honest. If humans found such a people, wouldn't it be better to just leave them alone? Are they ignorant or right? How could we ever co-exist with them? Should we co-exist with them?

BotE is not just a computer game.

The Malodans are advanced industrialists. They are a muscular, reptile-like breed from the Malodan system. Their heavy industry produces enormous amounts of hazardous and toxic waste, but for which they have not researched economical methods of disposal. There is little money and plans to dispose of the hazardous and toxic waste from their heavy industries. Your current disposal measures are extremely harmful to the environment and mostly very dangerous for yourself and for strangers. In the vicinity of their huge production facilities, wearing a particularly heavily armored protective suit is essential for survival. On the one hand, it protects against radiant antimatter waste, on the other hand, the high temperatures are otherwise hardly bearable. Instead of investing their technological potential in environmental protection, their heavy industry is being expanded. Your manufactured goods are in great demand everywhere and are collected as quickly as possible in the most modern transport centers and then shipped.

Home system: Malodan

Technological progress: progressive

Special ability: industry

Bribery: medium bribery

Spaceman nation: no

Special building: antimatter power generator: +1 morale in the system, +150 energy Large recycling plant: +2 morale in the system, -20% industrial transport center: +4 trade routes Malodan slider: + 25 % credit bonus, +20% resource bonus
The Malodan are a parody of some types of human beings. They have a rich homeworld and system. Should you exploit them? Is that ethical?

BotE has 14 levels of technology. Eventually all species either realize they must change or embrace their current ethical system and consider it dogmatically to be the "truth and virtuous".

So if I were modding this, then eventually such species would not only realize the folly of their ways, but likely due to younger generations being iconoclastic as an element of transitioning into adulthood, I would have opposition groups and new paradigms. And eventually things would change and it's never a clear path.

Michael Moore just produced a documentary where he admits the folly of green technology that in some ways pollutes the Earth worse and that green technology is NOT sustainable. Then he goes completely off the rails and embraces democide by suggesting human beings are the problem and so we need less humans to restore the Earth. In other words, Moore is celebrating his innate death wish.

New ideas and paradigms can be worse that the earlier folly held by the majority. Maybe the Luddites are right?

But in BotE terms, advanced technology would likely address pollution as the only other option is colonization and ruining that new planet as well.

If BotE is a teaching tool and not just a time waster, then you have 40 levels of technology and species realize that their long held beliefs ruined their world and system and now they have a debt obligation or the people will suffer horrendously.

In 1987, Wayne Douglas Barlowe authored a book depicting famous diverse extraterrestrial species from various science fiction novels. At the time, illustrations were still quite rare as were fan's depictions and seldom seen outside of science fiction conventions. You have to realize how limited computer information technology was too, so unless one bought such books, they simply were not available at say public libraries. Although you may find one today locally. I believe it's out-of-print.

The problem with loaning books to friends is they seldom find their way home. Mine has been missing now for more than a decade.

If you were an artist and a modder seeking to add major or minor races to BotE, then perusing it would likely inspire you.

The hardbound edition was printed in 1979.

This has quite a few images at the link.

The Cryer imagined by author Joseph L Green was fascinating.

Now largely forgotten Zenna Henderson imagined extraterrestrials dwelling on the Earth in a cloistered community like Mennonites or the Amish but with psychokinesis and many paranormal talents though looking like humans.

Membership
http://birth-of-the-empires.de/wiki/ind ... #Akzeptanz

To gain the most members, a major race has:
1. Similar racial characteristics as the minor race.
2. Is accepted at 40% as the threshold or higher. Watched for "devoted" status.
3. Trusts the major race and likely triggered by terraforming their sector (if having at least trade but better friendship status) and using gifts to level up their demeanor like from "not cooperative" to "neutral". You have to get them at least to that state to engage in diplomacy.
4. Trust often occurs from an actual trade route and major races having a history of peace. It's very dfficult to engage in trade as you have so little mining capability from turn 1-300 and trade makes no sense after turn 500 as it's largely unprofitable and you need resources as raw materials for infrastructure upgrades, ships, and troops.
5. So you want to get the minor race to friendship status so trade is unnecessary.
